Who is Jesus?

We answer that question every Sunday as we say the words of the Apostles’ Creed. Jesus is God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived, born, suffered, was crucified, died and was buried, decended, rose again, ascended, sits at the right hand of God, and will come again.  The verbs say it all because God has done it all, for us and our salvation. Through Jesus, He did all that was necessary for our forgiveness, life and salvation. That is why Jesus is the object of our faith. He is our Savior. He is the Lord to whom all Scripture points. His life, death, and resurrection is the Good News we call The Gospel.

As important as the question “Who is Jesus?” is also the question, “Why Jesus?” Why do we need a Savior and Lord? The answer to that depends on what you believe the problem to be. The Bible tells us, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

By God’s grace, through faith in Jesus that universal human problem finds its solution. “He who knew no sin became sin for us, so we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Cor. 5:21) On the cross, Jesus, the sinless One became sin for us. And in God’s “delightful exchange” (Martin Luther’s expression), we now become what He is – God’s beloved sons and daughters. All that is God’s gift of grace, undeserved love, received by faith. All that is why we need Jesus.
